LISTEN TO SAM LIVE ON WBGO

(New York, NY) July 14, 2019 – Basketball legend and educator, Sam Penceal joined  WBGO HostRob Crocker, Live On the Air, July 14th from 4:00 PM-5:00 PM, for a special radio broadcast to support public radio station WBGO and the Vaughn Harper & Dr. Bernadette Penceal Syracuse University Memorial Scholarship Fund. Penceal created this radio broadcast and the playlist to showcase the popular jazz tunes that connected him, Harper, Dr. Penceal and the other 70 minority students on-campus at Syracuse University during the 1960’s. Donors are asked to don ate at least $20 to support this initiative and to extend the giving tree to friends for matching support by asking five friends to do the same. Monies raised for Syracuse University will be presented annually to support one student in Communications and one in Education. A major component of this campaign is connecting with non-technology savvy friends for their support. “There is a network of donors who do not have access to the internet or smart phones who remember Vaughn and Bernie but need assistance on how to contribute. It is our hope that inspiring friends will personalize this effort to support deserving students by reaching out to others to join us.” states Penceal.

Vaughn Harper was a disc jockey who kept New Yorkers company after dark for decades with soothing music and a sleek baritone voice on the WBLS radio show “Quiet Storm.” He attended Syracuse University and played on the varsity team for three seasons. Harper helped Syracuse reach round eight in the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament in 1966. Harper’s radio career included New York-area stations WBGO, WWRL and WTJM, but ended his career back at WBLS in 2008.

Dr. Bernadette Penceal was a life-long educator. She spent twenty-nine years teaching at New York University eventually heading the English unit in the Higher Education Opportunity Program. She received a B.S. in Fashion Merchandising from Syracuse University, an M.A. in English from CCNY, and a PhD in Urban Education from Fordham University. While president of The Association of Black Women In Higher Education (ABWHE), she established a computer literacy program for under-performing special needs middle school boys at I.S. 10 in District 5 in Harlem and a mentoring program for students at MS 61 in District 17 in Brooklyn. ABWHE was acknowledged under her leadership for honoring the seventeen black women who served as college presidents in 1989. She is remembered by her students for her high standards, her demand for excellence and her unwavering support for each of them.

“It is truly and an honor and very exciting to start a scholarship fund and creating a radio show in memory of my two best friends. Education and music are important ingredients that conneceted the three of us in all of our accomplishments. It is only right that we do all we can to support those who follow us,” proclaims Penceal. Donations collected from this campaign will be given annually to an attending student at Syracuse University in Communications and in English. All donations to WBGO will directly support their non-profit broadcast. WBGO is operated as a non-profit, 501(C)3 organization in the public trust.
